Biological Pollutants
Many biological pollutants are living organisms or their by-products. Biological pollutants include
animal dander like feathers, hair, and skin, dust mites, cockroach remains, pollen, fungi, bacteria,
etc. These organic materials can cause allergic reactions including symptoms such as eye, nose, or
throat irritation, sneezing, stuffy nose, itching, coughing, wheezing, headache, fatigue, etc. These
biological pollutants are also significant causes or triggers for asthma.
Some sources of these biological pollutants is obvious, such as pets. Most of these elements are
invisible however and you may be unaware of the extent of the problem. Dust mites are invisible
creatures which live about our house, and can be especially abundant in our bedding. In sensitive
individuals contacting or inhaling dust mites can aggravate allergies or trigger asthma. Bacteria and
fungi in your home can also grow to quantities which can cause respiratory illness.
Certain conditions can contribute to a high concentration of these pollutants. Changes can be made
