Heavy Metals
Buildings, especially older homes, can contain materials with heavy metals. Heavy metals, such as
lead and mercury, can be found in building materials such as plumbing and paints, decorative glass
and ceramics, craft supplies, ammunition, car parts, and many more sources. Even if heavy metals
are not present in household materials, they are often brought in from contaminated areas outside
the home and accumulate to unhealthy levels over time. This is especially true of the South Puget
Sound due to former operations of the Asarco plant.

Heavy metal poisoning can cause headache, tremors, lack of coordination, muscle cramping,
personality changes, fatigue and weakness, hearing loss, nausea and lack of appetite,
gastrointestinal discomfort and constipation, and other symptoms. Children are most likely to suffer
exposure and health effects, due to their behaviors and physiology. Heavy metal exposure in
pregnancy has an impact on fetal development. Children may exhibit hyperactivity, reduce attention
spans, and learning and developmental problems with even low-level chronic exposure; studies
suggest that these impairments can be permanent. The American Academy of Pediatrics estimated
that 3-4 million children under six years old may have unhealthy amounts of lead in their blood and
that 400,000 fetuses may be impacted by maternal lead exposure.

Despite common misconception, heavy metals are still abundant in our environment. Former
generations of pervasive use still haunt our homes, our yards, and our neighborhoods. Paints as
recent as 1991 contain toxic mercury. Even today, the use of lead and mercury are not banned in
many products. As part of our inspections, we can help identify any materials which could be sources
of heavy metals. We consult on how to best avoid bringing heavy metals into the home.
