Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs)
Volatile organic compounds are a vast array of chemicals which easily become gases. Sources of
chemicals which emit fumes are numerous in indoor environment, such as adhesives, carpeting,
upholstery, manufactured wood products, copy machines, pesticides, cleaning agents, cosmetic
products, craft supplies, and multitudes if other sources. Many of these chemicals are completely
odorless and undetectable to exposed occupants. Some building materials can emit fumes for up to
10 years!

Volatile organic compounds can cause acute and chronic symptoms such as eye, nose, and throat
irritation, headaches, skin reactions, difficulty breathing, nausea, dizziness, nosebleeds, fatigue,
dizziness, sinus problems, cough, asthma, poor concentration and memory, muscle aches, and more.
These will occur in all occupants at high concentrations, but even low to moderate levels of VOCs
can produce reactions in sensitive individuals. Some commonly-used VOCs such as formaldehyde
and benzene are known to cause cancer with chronic exposure.

Given the seemingly endless number of sources of VOCs and the fact that most are odorless, it is
very difficult to assess how concentrated they may be in one's home. During our inspections, we can
test for VOC content of indoor air, as well as individual gases such as formaldehyde and chlorine.
Consultations are aimed at managing VOC concentrations, eliminating or minimizing sources, and
avoiding the introduction of new sources into one's home.
